The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, (TNPCB) on February 11, 2025, issued a Handbook on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Guidelines for E-Waste.
E-Waste refers to discarded electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), including parts, components, and waste generated from manufacturing, refurbishment, and repair processes. The E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 categorize EEE into seven broad classifications, covering 106 different types of equipment as per Schedule I of the rules.
With rapid technological advancements, E-Waste has become a significant environmental challenge. Proper management is essential not only for regulatory compliance but also for sustainability. The E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, enforced from April 1, 2023, establish a structured Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. These regulations require manufacturers, producers, refurbishers, and recyclers to register on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portal to ensure proper recycling and disposal in an environmentally sound manner.
To assist stakeholders, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has introduced a Handbook on EPR Guidelines for E-Waste Management. This handbook provides simplified guidance on compliance, helping industries transition from informal to formal recycling practices and promoting a circular economy through responsible e-waste disposal.
